Google today released their new flagship phones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Five years ago when Rick Osterloh joined Google as head of hardware, the second day on the job he sat down with Google's CEO Sundar Pichai and said we need to build our own SoC. The Pixel 6 is that plan brought to life. Google has called this their first flagship device and the first time they really think they can compete with Apple and Samsung for market share. As an Android neck beard for over a decade, and a Pixel hardo for half that, I'm skeptical that this device will be a huge breakout success. But five years from now it could be a real contender. Hardware takes time. But the fruits for Google are now just coming home to port (that's three sayings in one).
